The Merritt Live Theatre Society was incorporated on February 17, 2009. The four puproses of the society on incorporation are:
(a) To further the intersts of the perfoming arts in Meritt, BC and the surrounding areas:
(b) To produce and perform live theatre in and on behalf of the community;
(c) To assist in developing a cultural climate in the community that furthers the growth of the performing arts; and
(d) To encourage the writing and performance of works reflecting the history and culture of the area.
The founding directors were: Frances George, Mil Juricic, Nedra McKay, Jim Bruce, and Gin Zubrikas
The MLTS has performed: Love Letters, A Thousand Clowns, and Happy Hundred Merritt. All were well attended and covered production costs as well as increasing the capital inventory of the society.
Currently lighting bars have been constructed at the Legion, at the Civic Centre and (thanks to NVIT) in the lecture theatre at NVIT. A dimmer panel and set of lights have been purchased as well as a large inventory of extension cords. These and other items are stored in a tractor-trailer that is being purchased by the MLTS.
In pursuit of its objective to "further the interests of the performing arts" the NVTS has been active in promoting its relocation into a permanent venue. This in turn ties into the viability of the entertainment industry in Merritt: the community needs to work together to provide attractions for the convention and tourist industry in Merritt so that we hold visitors for prolonged periods.
Those interested in supporting live theatre are asked to get in touch with the NVTS president, Jim Bruce. Jim can be emailed at jimwbruce@gmail.com. Memberships in the NVITS are only $5.
